What Classic Familial Polyposis Means

Classic familial polyposis, also known as familial adenomatous polyposis or FAP, is an inherited condition that causes many abnormal growths called polyps to develop inside the colon and rectum. These polyps can number from hundreds to thousands and usually begin to appear during the teenage years or early adulthood. Polyps are small clumps of cells that are not normal and can turn into cancer if they are not found and removed early.

This condition is caused by changes in a gene called APC, which normally helps control how cells grow and divide. When this gene is altered, it leads to uncontrolled growth of polyps. Because the gene change is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, a person with classic familial polyposis usually has a parent with the condition, and each child has about a 50% chance of inheriting the gene mutation.
