What the HRAS Gene Means

The HRAS gene is a part of our DNA that provides instructions for making a protein involved in controlling how cells grow, divide, and respond to signals from the body. This protein acts like a switch, turning on and off signals that tell cells when to multiply or stop growing. When the HRAS gene works normally, it helps keep cell growth balanced and healthy.

Sometimes, changes called mutations occur in the HRAS gene. These mutations can cause the protein to be stuck in the “on” position, leading cells to grow and divide too much. This uncontrolled growth can contribute to the development of cancer. HRAS is known as a proto-oncogene, meaning it normally helps regulate growth but can promote cancer if mutated.

Why HRAS Matters in Cancer Care

Mutations in the HRAS gene have been found in some types of cancer, including bladder cancer. In bladder cancer, HRAS mutations may be linked to how the cancer progresses and the chance it might come back after treatment. Understanding whether HRAS mutations are present can sometimes help doctors learn more about the cancer’s behavior.

HRAS mutations are also involved in a rare genetic condition called Costello syndrome. This syndrome affects growth and development and increases the risk of certain tumors, both noncancerous and cancerous. While Costello syndrome is uncommon, knowing about HRAS helps explain some of the changes seen in this condition.

What Patients Might See or Hear About HRAS

If HRAS is mentioned in your medical records, test results, or treatment discussions, it might be related to genetic testing of a tumor or inherited genetic testing. You might hear about HRAS mutations when doctors talk about cancer risk, tumor behavior, or genetic conditions like Costello syndrome. Because HRAS mutations can appear in different situations, it’s important to ask your care team what it means for your specific health.

What HRAS Does Not Automatically Mean

Seeing the term HRAS or HRAS mutation does not mean you have cancer or a specific diagnosis by itself. Not all HRAS mutations cause cancer, and not all tumors with HRAS mutations behave the same way. Also, having Costello syndrome is different from having cancer, though it increases the risk of some tumors. HRAS is one piece of a larger medical picture.
